OMG Tim Tebow!

One of the "Must See" articles on ESPN.com today is this gag-worthy fluff on Tim Tebow.

Why the media obsession with Tebow? Is his story so incredible? Let's recap:

- Great college QB whose skills don't translate to the NFL
- Religious
- Emotional leader
- Overzealous D-bag

OK, so maybe the last one is just me. But isn't the general sentiment in the first three true about Troy Smith or Trent Dilfer? What about Andre Ware, Charlie Ward, Gino Toretta, Tommy Frazier...? Why are we supposed to be excited about this guy's NFL career?

  1. I had to pause for a second and look to see if I wrote this post and had forgot.

What you are forgetting though that the media has told us is that he will be successful in the NFL. Why? Cause Josh McDaniel is smarter than everyone else.

  2. It took him 6 weeks to fix mechanics that most other guys can't fix in a lifetime. If he's that receptive to coaching, his natural skills will translate. He's stronger (running, absorbing hits, and throwing long outs) than any of the guys you mentioned and was more successful than any of the guys you mentioned. I love the fact that he gets chastised for his religion in the year 2010. And he does get chastised for his beliefs. Probably more so than that guy in the white house did while going to a black liberation church (is he a D-bag too Jim?)

Why the hype about a late first round QB? I'd suggest its more because he stands up for what he believes and miserable people are annoyed by that. Misery loves company.

So what makes him a D-bag, Jim? Is it because he gives back to the community, goes on missions, believes in life, or what? Is it his fault that the media loves to both praise and criticize him?

    Sounds like you're the D-bag.

  3. Yeah I heard he didn't have any black people at his draft party either. What's up with that Jim?

  4. Seeing that I am a huge Gator fan I think Tebow will be a GREAT quaterback! Here are some reasons why. He offers amixture of God-given talent, relentless work ethic, competitiveness, and grit. He also has the physical tools and decision-making ability that are key in the next level.he makes the right choices at the right times, evidenced by his four- and six-interception counts the past two seasons, respectively. To put this in perspective, Sam Bradford, the # 1 pick had 16 interceptions in the last two years.

  5. I agree with Jim (huh) regarding Tebow's skills. They aren't the kind that translate to the NFL. However, in the Broncos system, he's a good fit. He will have to throw slants and hitches, an occasional bomb, and hand the ball off a lot. He will need to be able to move and throw (some waggles, stuff like that), and I think he can do those things pretty well. Worthy of a 1st round pick? Nope. A second rounder? If Kordell was, then so was Tebow. The Broncos panicked that he wouldn't be available to them in the second round, so they traded up. It's more logical than we probably think it is.

  6. Some people have it all wrong on Tebow. People make way too much about Tebow's mechanics. The way the draft is now, the slightest imperfection causes sheer panic. OMG .. Tebow's arm angle is bad... OMG he doesn't have a solid repeatable deliver (is he a pitcher?) ... OMG he didn't play in a pro style offense... seriously, people need to settle down and just look a how he played the game. A TREMENDOUS college QB, Drew Brees fell all the way into the second round just because he wasn't 6'4".. that's it.. his only knock, oh the horror.

Tim Tebow really is a great guy and did a great job changing how he throws the ball.

Impressive, absolutely.. but guess what.. the guy throws one of the worst balls I have ever seen. People talk about his mechanics, I talk about the fact that he can't throw for a lick even when he uses the delivery he grew up with. Six week magic fixes aren't going to solve the inevitable truth that Tim Tebow, regardless or system, regardless of mechanics, regardless of his being a d-bag ... throws ducks and is weak at going through his progressions. He has his qualities, not taking them away from him, but let's be serious this guy is not an NFL QB

As for his leadership, certainly nothing against his faith, character, etc ... all of those things are commendable. But you need to relate to the people you mean to lead. His over the top style might work when your a legend with everyone looks up to but as a unproven and insanely over-hyped rookie amongst proven veterans, amongst grown men.... a lot of people will have same response the unnamed player did before the Wonderlic exam when Tebow called for a group prayer.... "Shut the **** up"

  7. Several good points.

I would identify Tebow's biggest flaw as his tunnel vision. I don't think that is correctable once you reach the NFL.

His highlights on his deep passes were better highlights for his WRs than him. So I agree that he doesn't throw the best ball.

But if there is one system in the NFL where he's a good fit, I think it's Denver's. Just being Kyle Orton or Jake Plummer isn't good enough. If Tebow can be better than those 2 bozos, he'll be viewed as a success.

If not, he's going to go down as a bigger bust than he should. Plenty of late 1st round QBs never make it (like JP Losman, Brady Quinn, etc), but Tebow's name will be linked with guys like Jamarcus Russell, Akili Smith, and David Klingler if he doesn't pan out. Double-edged sword of having the media writing about you every time you cough.
